Do We Dare Ask?
Walking with God on the daily path of life can be peaceful and serene. Yet have you ever taken hold of His hand allowing Him to lead the way? He will veer off the beaten path and will follow deer trails that will cause you to jump the streams and see the cascade of wild ferns that cover the creek banks. The orange and black butterflies will dance about you as you walk through a meadow of wildflowers. You will hear the birds calling out as you invade their property. If you watch closely you may see the black, red, and white flash of the pileated woodpeckers as they glide through the forest from tree to tree seeking their delicacies with a loud rat-tat-tat that echoes through the woodland scene like a drummer keeping time for the marching band.
What a marvelous experience we have when we spend time walking with God, yet do we take advantage of all the privileges He gives us? Do we talk with Him? Do we share our fears, our heartaches, our doubts and joys? Do we ask Him for His wisdom when we are faced with great decisions or do we just walk quietly with our eyes opened and our mouths closed? I believe He loves to converse with us. More importantly, I believe He loves us to ask Him questions. Let’s look at scripture and see how He relates to others.
In Isaiah 1:18 the Lord says, “Come now, let us reason together. . .” The World Book Dictionary defines reason as discuss, consider, solve problems, to think things out. Do we do this with our God? Genesis chapter 18 provides us with a heart-felt conversation that displays the attitude of God toward a man who carefully asks God to consider certain circumstances. It is the story of Abraham pleading for the lives of the righteous prior to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Gideon also gives us an example of asking God to do something amazing in order to be certain of his calling. His story is found in Judges Chapter 6. I know it well for I recently have asked God to do something for me in “Gideon fashion.” May 21st, 2007, I received 225 self-published books from ACW press. I reached for my Bible, read Judges 6 and prayed this prayer:
I have never in all of my life prayed like Gideon, but today I am going to ask you for something. In the event you are going to do something with this book, will you please let me know and sell all 225 books in a month? In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen I made a simple, straight-forward request of God that required me to step aside completely and allow Him to answer. I had no time to market or help for I was working and writing research papers on a weekly basis for my graduate class. If we dare to ask are we prepared when He answers? I asked, He answered. He sold all 225 books in a month and I stand amazed at His marketing abilities. Talk with Him as you walk with Him. Reason and question and realize that He cares, He hears, and He answers. Remember His assuring words in Judges 6: 16, “I will be with you. . .” We never walk alone when we walk and talk with God!
I am praying that our conversations deepen as we dare to ask our Father sincere questions. I am thankful to be your sister in Christ.
John 14: 14 “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Mark 11: 24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
I John 3: 21 & 22 “Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.”
